Era consensus
One of my brothers-in-law (my wife's brother) has a grandson; when he was in his 50 s, the grandson started to went to the kindergarten not long ago; one day, the grandson went home and said: [Grandpa! I was peeing last time; why did you touch my little bird? I'll call the police to arrest you! ] The in-law was shocked and recalled that it was a month ago. One day, the little grandson was peeing with standing; my brother-in-law feared that he would pee on the pants, so he "helped" the bird a little with a finger. It might be the kindergarten teacher began to teach the knowledge of sexual harassment prevention, and the little boy would have such a rash move. Now, the little boy is in high school. At the annual festival or Chinese New Year, a small reunion, the in-law even mentioned this past event, and all families always laughed out loud.
I was born in the post-war baby boom of the early 1950 s; Taiwan was still an agricultural society; a couple had three or four children at least; my first uncle had seven children, 3rd uncle had 8, and we had 4. The scenes are everywhere; during the busy time of farming, the adults go out to do farming work in the earlier morning; how can they have leisure time to take care of children? Therefore, when adults go out, children have to "self-care" or care for each other in their pee and poo; at that time, most children wore pants with slits (some called crotch pants), the penis, and butt exposed all day. Although unsightly and unsanitary, they were also the most environmentally friendly because they did not have to change diapers. When children were growing up a little, or went to formal occasions. For example, at the wedding party, the children were peeing, as mentioned above, and adults got to "help the little bird," but nowadays they are taboo!
Somebody asks: [Was there no latrine pit?] Yes, in the 1950 s or 1960 s, southern Taiwanese countryside, most latrine pit were just for pooing or for women peeing (without running water, how can it be called bathroom or toilet ?) ; children or adult men used to pee outside anywhere.
The different thinking of the times is also very different; the longer the difference more significant it. For example, when I was a child, I saw a few grannies with tiny feet; when they were walking, they were looked ugly! However, you know that at the age of their birth, they wouldn't get married if they won't wrap up their feet. I often guess that the men before the end of the Qing Dynasty ( before 1912) were full of poo in their brains? Otherwise, why should a woman have a pair of three-inch golden lotus feet, and a flat breast is a beauty that strange aesthetic? As I said above, there are different times and times when everybody thinks this is right (but not right). Once it becomes a popular trend called "custom," I call it "the consensus of the times." once the trend direction is formed, it's difficult to reverse.
